TRENDS AND PROGRESS OF MERGER AND ACQUISITION IN INDIAN BANKING SECTOR: AN ANALYTICAL STUDY

The main aim of the present study is to examine the trends and progress of mergers and acquisitions in Indian banking sector. Mergers and Acquisitions are not new in India. The reasons may be different from time to time and may vary from company to company. The tasks of the combination have become more convenient after the new economic policy (liberalization policy in 1991). The study is based on secondary data, the required secondary data have been collected through RBI Reports, CMIE Data base and other articles and magazines. therefore, the study concluded that, Banking sector is one of the fastest growing areas in the Indian economy. Mergers and acquisitions considered as one of most useful strategy for and expansion. M&A in Indian banking sectors has provided evidence that it is useful tool for survival of weak banks by merging in to larger bank. It can be observed in the study is, the maximum small ad weak banks merged with large and public sectors banks in both pre and post liberalization period.
